Why I started Yachting
I always knew I wanted to make a living by traveling the world to see new places, meet great people, and hopefully "find myself" in the process.
It was 2011 when I had my first encounter with a Mega Yacht. At the time, I was waiting tables at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa.
While wiping down the tables, getting the restaurant ready for the double shift I had that day, I watched this giant floating palace dock right in front of the restaurant. I was dumbfounded by what I witnessed as I gazed at the yacht and the crew onboard with the greatest admiration.
All these wild thoughts raced through my head, such as:
How did those crew members get there?
Where did they just come from?
What did they do to get that job onboard?
Are there more superyachts like that?
How much do they earn?
Is prior boating experience required to work on a yacht?
Do I have what it takes?
How do I learn more?
What is a calling in life?
A calling is magnetic and all-consuming.
Callings draw you toward them. They start as a little nagging thought or feeling, then begin to consume your mind and drive your everyday life. You'll feel a sense of urgency and a strong inclination to follow a calling.
Do you want something bad enough to go out and fight for it?
A few weeks went by, and I still couldn't get the thought of that yacht out of my mind. I knew I had to take action, so I started doing research, speaking to people who had skin in the game, and eventually, I found myself doing courses to become a deckhand. Once I had those qualifications in place, I had the confidence to practice dock walking, which I did in the City of Cape Town.
I provided my free fresh deckhand services to the few yachts at the V&A Waterfront to gain practical experience during my off days. At this stage, I worked as an Apple Product Professional selling some of the world's most innovative electronics to save up for my journey ahead.
Less than a year later, March 2012, I headed for Miami, and the rest is history.
How to get into yachting
What seems evident to me now was once utterly foreign and daunting to me.
I've learned a lot since I first joined the yachting industry, and if you're currently looking for answers like I once was, then don't stress because I have compiled some of my findings to help you get answers.
What I do
Since I started in the yachting industry in 2011, I discovered I had a unique way of connecting people to each other as well as identifying quality.
I developed these skills over the years, and I now support yachties and the businesses that serve them around the world full time.
